The Bengali Association of Mid Missouri (BAMM) is a community of people who believe that life is better with good conversation, good food, good music, and the occasional spirited debate.
"We are a community that values culture with curiosity and tradition with thinking."
Rooted in the rich intellectual and cultural traditions of Bengal, we bring together Bengalis and friends of Bengali culture across Mid Missouri to celebrate and promote our art, literature, language, festivals — and yes, strong opinions over strong tea.
Our mission is to foster a vibrant, intellectually curious, and welcoming Bengali community — because preserving culture isn't just about remembering the past. It's about thinking, questioning, and celebrating together in the present and future.
We celebrate Tagore as much as street food, Rabindra Sangeet as much as modern cinema, and thoughtful dialogue as much as laughter. We are scholars, professionals, artists, families, students, and lifelong learners of Bengali origin and connection.
From sacred pujos to community picnics, we celebrate the full breadth of Bengali life together throughout the year.
Celebrating the goddess of knowledge, arts, and wisdom. Our first major event of the year, welcoming the Bengali community and beyond.
The Bengali celebration of Holi — colors, spring, and renewal. A beloved community-only gathering full of song and joy.
Bengali New Year — a vibrant cultural celebration with music, dance, and the welcoming of a new year with full hearts.
Family fun day with games, adda, outdoor activities, and a beloved Bengali potluck feast. A cherished community tradition.
📅 June 21 · Lake of the Ozarks State Park
Our grandest celebration of the year — Maa Durga's arrival, marked with elaborate decoration, cultural programs, and the warmth of community.
The bittersweet farewell — gathering to exchange Bijoya greetings, share mishti, and carry the blessings of the season forward together.
BAMM is guided by a 3-member Core Group elected every 3 years. Decisions are made through consensus or majority vote — all members hold equal standing. No king.
"In Core Group, decisions will be made through consensus or majority vote. All three members have equal standing, and no one person holds any overriding authority."
Elected unanimously — 14 Ayes, 0 Nays — at the organizational meeting of December 14, 2025
Each major event is organized by three specialized committees, each with two co-leads elected by the community. Every committee has full autonomy in its domain.
Full autonomy over venue decoration, idol transport, puja-related items, and post-event cleanup. All arrangements must be complete by 8 AM on the day of the event.
Full autonomy over the menu design, food quantities, potluck coordination, and kitchen management. Volunteers must confirm commitments 48 hours before the event.
Full freedom to design and arrange all cultural programs. The final lineup is locked 24 hours before the event. Priority: BAMM performers, then outside Bengali, then non-Bengali.
Glimpses of our community coming together — food, culture, and togetherness.
Anyone with Bengali heritage or connection can be a member. Annual family membership is $10. Friends of Bengali culture are warmly welcomed as guest members.
Core Group is elected by the community every 3 years with no member serving consecutive terms. Voting uses a weighted system recognizing long-term community engagement.
Each event committee has full autonomy in its domain. The Core Group intervenes only if a committee's actions conflict with established bylaws or agreed responsibilities.
All event donations are due two weeks before the event. Every purchase requires a receipt for reimbursement. A balance sheet is shared within 2 weeks after every event.
Before each major event, the Core Group convenes a community-wide planning meeting to decide on donations, dates, venues, pujari arrangements, and committee roles.
Students serve as MCs to promote their involvement. Anyone interested in serving on committees can volunteer — if more than two, a community vote determines the final two.
Become part of our growing family. Membership is open to anyone with Bengali heritage or connection — and friends of Bengali culture are always welcome.
